Ethiopias Tiki Gelana Wins Gold Sets New Olympic Womens

LONDON (AP) — Tiki Gelana felt the marathon slipping away when she tumbled on the rain-slickened street.Around the halfway point of the race, the Ethiopian was knocked down by another runner as she reached for her water bottle, a hard fall that bloodied her right elbow. Already aching, Gelana thought about pulling out. Instead, she found new motivation, and headed on down the road.Gelana recovered from the fall to win the Olympic marathon on Sunday in a race that began in a downpour, was briefly brightened by sunshine and ended in another drenching rain. She was soaked as she crossed the finish line, but she didn’t seem to mind, raising her hands high to celebrate after navigating the rainy course in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 7 seconds to hold off Priscah Jeptoo of Kenya by five seconds. Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova of Russia won the bronze in the typical London weather.“When I fell, I said, ‘Oh, wow, I’m not going to finish,”‘ Gelana said through an interpreter. “But I just concentrated on running. All of a sudden, I made it.”Gelana said she loved running in the rain. “I have been doing that since I was a small child,” she said, a bandage on her elbow. “I enjoyed my run.”There was a small group of runners in a bunched pack over the last three miles. But with the finish around the bend, Gelana made her move, grimacing as she surged to the front. With the rain picking up – going from a light drizzle to a deluge – she kept glancing over her shoulder to see if Jeptoo was gaining ground. She wasn’t. No one could catch Gelana as she easily coasted across the line to win the biggest race of her life and Ethiopia’s second Olympic gold medal in the women’s event.Read more: Sports Illustrated read more

REGISTRATION CLOSED 24000 persons now of age to cast ballot

first_img Constitutional requirement on General Elections explained Nomination Day in the Bahamas Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppBahamas, April 11, 2017 – Nassau –Approximately 24,000 persons will cast their first ballot come May 10th.  This as persons coming of the voting age of 18 since the last polls held in 2012 make up for an approximate 13.76 percent of the 170,000 registered voting list. And while last minute tallies at Voter Registration Centres across the Bahamas are currently ongoing, Parliamentary Registration Department Commissioner, Sherlyn Hall says he anticipates this figure to increase in the coming days as the count ends. The registration process is said to have closed off 11pm on Monday night, despite the 5pm deadline on Monday.  However, Commissioner Hall is also refuting claims that persons were turned away while standing in line before 5pm.   Initial reports suggested that some centres closed off registration at 3pm as opposed to the advertised closing time of 5pm.   Speaking to Magnetic Media News, Mr. Hall says persons in queue by 5pm were issued tickets to ensure they were able to get processed and registered, as accommodations were made for them. He adds that the centres were supported by members of the Police Service to ensure order was maintained.   The Parliament Registration Department Commissioner underscored that only persons who arrived after the 5pm close off were turned away.According to the Central Intelligence Agency’s World Factbook, Bahamas population stands at 327, 316, of which 221,187 persons are said to be of the voting age and eligible to cast ballots in the General Elections 2017. Story by: Kimberly Ramkhalawan#MagneticMediaNews#letsvoteBahamas#voterregistrationclosed Related Items:#LetsvoteBahamas, #magneticmedianews, #voterregistrationclosed Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Long lines for Registration, Department ready for influx Recommended for youlast_img read more

We didn’t move it, didn’t break, there was no mobility.”After three consecutive clean sheets in all competitions, Wolves’ defence was pierced twice in a minute in a style which disappointed Nuno.“First one OK, but the second is our ball and we had to take the game where we want to take it. Every goal is annoying, but we must not do it again, it’s control of the game, even if we concede a goal.“They got the second goal immediately after the first. NASA is shooting an asteroid with a giant DART to help save

first_imgNASA’s DART spacecraft will blast off to the asteroid 65803 Didymos to crash into its moon.  NASA If an asteroid was shooting towards Earth, what would our options be? Sure, we could send up a ragtag team of miners to drill into the asteroid, plant a nuke and blast it to smithereens. But if NASA has its way, we won’t need to train miners to be astronauts — it has other plans to deflect those deadly asteroids. (A lucky thing too, because it makes far more sense to teach already-trained astronauts to use a drill rather than putting miners through astronaut school, but that’s another matter entirely). NASA is prepping for a (potential) doomsday outcome with the Double Asteroid Redirection Test — a mission that will test whether we can crash a spacecraft into an asteroid and knock it off course, thus saving humankind and preventing us from ever sending Bruce Willis into space. In this week’s episode of Watch This Space, we take a look at the DART mission to 65803 Didymos — a binary asteroid (complete with its own companion “moonlet”) that’s currently orbiting the sun out past Earth. Now playing: Watch this: NASA wants to save the Earth from asteroids (with a giant… Share your voice According to NASA, the moonlet (or “Didymoon” as it’s been nicknamed) is a perfect example of an asteroid of the size and type that could crash into Earth. So, the space agency wants to send its DART spacecraft up there as early as Dec. 2020 to blast towards the 150-metre-wide moonlet and crash into its surface. Imagine it like a game of pool. If you need to knock the 8 ball in the corner pocket, you knock the cue ball into its side and it’ll shoot off on an angle. By sending its cue ball careening into the moonlet, NASA will measure how the impact changes the moonlet’s momentum and hopefully get a better idea of how asteroids can be redirected in future. To learn more about the DART, the partner mission being run by the European Space Agency and what all this has to do with Elijah Wood and the film “Labyrinth” (there are connections, we promise) then check out this week’s episode of Watch This Space. Google Doodle celebrates 50 years of LGBTQ pride

first_img Online Tech Industry Our favorite Google Doodles through the years Share your voice Tags Google Doodle Google Comments 99+ 49 Photos Google’s Pride Doodle depicts the growing size of the Pride celebration over the past half century. Google Fifty years ago this month, New York police launched an early morning raid on a small Greenwich Village bar popular with members of the gay community, sparking the Stonewall riots and ushering in the modern battle for LGBT rights in the US.To celebrate the 50 years of Pride celebrations that followed, Google published a Doodle sideshow on Tuesday that offers a taste of Pride parades from each of the five decades. Google’s Doodlers wanted the Doodle to underscore how the Pride parade has grown in size and momentum over the past half century, empowering a bright and vibrant community along the way.Over the years, Google has taken a high-profile stance in support of gay rights. In 2008, the company announced its opposition to Proposition 8, an anti-gay marriage measure that California voters ultimately approved. To mark June as Gay and Lesbian Pride month, Google has traditionally added a rainbow to the right side of the search bar when users search for “gay,” “lesbian,” “transgender,” or related terms. This year’s return on those search terms is a graphic depicting Pride celebrations around the world. For this year’s Doodle, Doodler Nate Swinehart said he decided to use strips of cut paper to depict the people and the setting. By adding multiple layers of paper, which by its nature is flat, the Doodle grows to reflect the community’s expansion. Color, of course, is a key symbol of Pride.google-doodle-2009-june-4-pride-2019Color is a key symbol of Pride. Google “While everything begins with shades of grey, we first see the rainbow through a community space,” Swinehart explains. “Color then begins to spread, first in individual people, then to the city around them, until it finally overtakes the entire composition.”I also wanted the progression of color to be meaningful, beginning with the initial pink triangle that was reclaimed by the community as a symbol of liberation. From there, we go backwards through the rainbow from purple to red, until we see all the colors come together harmoniously in the final image.”Swinehart writes that, as a member of the LGBTQ community, this Doodle was a very personal project for him, especially because he’s well acquainted with the struggle to feel included and accepted.”Before I joined Google in 2014, I remember opening up the Google homepage to see a Doodle celebrating the Winter Olympics, depicting the colors of the Pride flag. I was completely blown away,” Swinehart writes. “Looking at the front page of Google, I was filled with hope and a feeling of belonging. “That moment was a large part of why I wanted to become a Doodler. I recognized the opportunity we have to make a positive impact on the world, and to help make people feel seen, heard, and valued.”last_img read more

Paytm removes 2 charge on using credit cards to add money to

first_imgPaytm usage has increased over the last few months as India pushes towards digital economy. Some users took advantage of a loophole in the online payment platform to get free credits and other benefits, which was discovered by Paytm and a stern measure was taken to prevent it. But that did not bode well for the digital wallet company.Paytm announced on Thursday that it is withdrawing two percent charge on credit cards for adding money to wallet owing to the immense inconvenience caused by the move. The withdrawal took place in just 24 hours after Paytm implemented transaction fees on credit cards in a bid to curb misuse of credit cards. The company said that some users took advantage of the free transactions to recharge their wallet using a credit card and then transfer the money back to their bank accounts. This not only added funds to the account at zero cost, it also won free loyalty points and free credits.International Business Times, India, interviewed an avid Paytm user, who spoke on the condition on anonymity, about utilising Paytm’s model to rotate money.”I recharged my Paytm wallet using my credit card, transferred the money back to my savings account and used the funds to pay by credit card bill. Although it was a one-off case, I was able to avoid hefty bank charges for non-payment and affect my credit score.”This trend affected Paytm, as it loses money. Paytm’s revenue model relies on users spending the money in their wallet within the network. The online payment solutions company said that it pays hefty charges to banks and card networks when users use their credit cards. For the sake of millions of customers!Paytm backtracked on its two percent charge on using credit card for adding money to wallet after it was met with strong resistance from a large group of users. But the One97 Communications Ltd-owned company is committed to build new features to curb any kind of misuse on its platform.”With an intent to prevent the misuse of transfer to bank facility at 0%, we had applied a refundable fee of 2% on add-money through credit cards. At the same time, we are conscious that this move caused inconvenience to a large segment of our users, including those who are using their credit card for genuine transactions,” Paytm said in an official blog post.Paytm currently has 200 million users, making it India’s largest online payment platform. The move was partly to keep its users from switching to rival MobiKwik, which promised to offer services at no cost. MobiKwik has a user base of 55 million in India.last_img read more

AL men repressing women BNP

first_imgBNPBangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior leader Abdul Moyeen Khan on Wednesday alleged that ruling party men are repressing women and indulging in various misdeeds across the country with the ‘blessings’ of the government.”How is it possible to violate a young girl promising her to help get admitted to a college? The offenders couldn’t dare commit such a misdeed without the blessings of the government and administration that control power,” he said.Speaking at a human chain programme, the BNP leader further said, “I’m forced to say it with a serious concern that Bangladesh has been put under the grasp of evil forces. It’s my question whether are we living in a civilised country or in an African jungle?”Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, BNP’s women wing, arranged the programme in front of the National Press Club condemning and protesting at the violence against two women in Bogra unleashed by ruling party men.The leaders and activists of the organisation registered their protest against the incident wearing black clothes in their heads.According to media reports, Bogra town Sramik League convener Tufan Sarker with the help of his party cadres abducted a female student from her home and raped her last month.Sramik League is the workers’ wing of ruling Bangladesh Awami League. The ruling party men allegedly beat up the girl and her mother, and shaved their heads as they went to local councillor Rumki’s house seeking justice on Friday.Police arrested Tufan, his wife, mother-in-law, councillor Rumke and some other perpetrators in connection with the incident.Moyeen, a BNP standing committee member, asked the government to let people know who pampered Tufan and his associates to commit such heinous crime. “The sources of power of the offenders are guns and terrorism. The country can’t run in this way.”To get rid of the current situation, the BNP leader urged the government to hold a fair election under a neutral administration quitting power. “I would like to say the government should step down, and arrange a fair election if it has minimum sense of shyness.”He alleged that repressive acts and all forms of misdeeds have got spread during the rule of the current government as it has destroyed all the state and social institutions.BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged the government is regularly arresting journalists and sending them to jail using the section 57 of the ICT act as Sheikh Hasina established one-party rule Baksal in a different form.He termed a historic incident the release of the full text of the Supreme Court verdict that annulled 16th constitution amendment at a time when the ruling party men established a reign of terror across the country. The BNP leader said this verdict has created a bit of fresh hope among people to have the rule of law restored in the country.Speaking at the programme, Mohila Dal president Afroza Abbas urged the government to punish those arrested in connection with the torture of the two Bogra women by shaving their heads the way they did it with the victims. She also demanded the government ensure the highest punishment for main accused Tufan, his brother and other culprits.last_img read more

Barack Obama says goodbye in farewell speech

first_imgUS President Barack Obama gets emotional as he delivers a statement on executive actions to reduce gun violence on January 5, 2016 at the White House in Washington, DC. AFPBarack Obama closes the book on his presidency Tuesday, with a farewell speech in Chicago that will try to lift supporters felled by Donald Trump’s shock victory.Obama’s last trip on Air Force One will be a pilgrimage to his adoptive hometown, where he will address a sell-out crowd not far from where he accepted the presidency eight years ago.Diehard fans—many African Americans—have braved Chicago’s frigid winter to collect free tickets, which now sell for upwards of $1,000 a piece on Craigslist. The First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden will come along on for the ride.Obama’s cross-country trek would be a sentimental trip down memory lane, were it not slap-bang in the middle of a tumultuous presidential handover.Trump has smashed conventions, vowed to efface Obama’s legacy and hurled personal insults left and right. The 2016 election campaign has raised serious questions about the resilience of US democracy. In a virtually unprecedented move, US intelligence has accused the Kremlin of tipping the electoral scales in Trump’s favor.Democrats, cast into the political wilderness with the loss of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives plus a majority of statehouses, are struggling to regroup. With an approval rating hovering around 55 percent, Obama will hope to steel them for new battles ahead.Lead speechwriter Cody Keenan said the address will be about Obama’s vision for where the country should still go.“It’s not going to be like an anti-Trump speech, it’s not going to be a red meat, rabble rousing thing, it will be statesman-like but it will also be true to him,” Keenan told AFP. “It will tell a story.”Life after White House -Trump’s unorthodox politics has thrown 55-year-old Obama’s transition and post-presidency plans into flux.Obama, having vowed a smooth handover of power, finds himself being increasingly critical of Trump as he prepares to leave office on January 20.After that there will still be a holiday and an autobiography, but Obama could find himself being dragged backed into the political fray if Trump were to enact a Muslim registry or deport adults brought to the United States years ago by their parents.Having vowed to take a backseat in politics, Obama’s second act could yet be as politically engaged as Jimmy Carter—whose post-presidency has remade his image as an elder statesman. Many Obama aides who had planned to take exotic holidays or launch coffer-replenishing forays into the private sector are also reassessing their future and mulling a return to the political trenches.Obama’s foundation is already gearing up for a quasi-political role—funneling idealistic youngsters into public life.Presidential precedent -Presidents since George Washington have delivered a farewell address of sorts.Washington’s final 7,641-word message—which is still read once a year in the Senate by tradition—contained warnings about factionalism and interference by foreign powers that seem oddly prescient. But speechwriter Keenan sees few obvious templates: “Bush and Clinton did theirs from here (the White House), George H.W. Bush went to West Point, gave a foreign policy speech,” he told AFP. “They are all totally different.”The trip to Chicago is not just for nostalgia, Keenan indicated.“The thread that has run though his career from his days as community organizer to the Oval Office is the idea that if you get ordinary people together and get them educated, get them empowered, get them to act on something, that’s when good things happen,” he said.“For him, as someone who started as a community organizer, whose campaign was powered by young people, ordinary people, we decided we wanted to go back to Chicago.”“Chicago is not just his hometown, it’s where his career started.”And now it is also where Obama’s presidential career will effectively end.last_img read more

Telefónicas rivals in the Spanish market are cont

first_imgTelefónica’s rivals in the Spanish market are continuing to pile pressure on the country’s competition regulator to impose strict conditions on the telco if it is to go ahead and approve its acquisition of pay TV provider Canal+. Orange has reportedly asked the regulator, the CNMC, to guarantee that all rival operators will be able to take a wholesale offer of TV channels at regulated prices. Orange has also asked the regulator to extend the obligations imposed on Telefónica to open its fibre network to rival players.Orange head of regulatory affairs Julio Gomez told Spanish press that Orange was not against Telefónica buying TV rights in principle but that consumers should not be tied to the operator’s mobile and broadband offerings if they want to view its premium content. Orange has therefore asked the regulator to regulate the wholesale prices that Telefónica’s charges to ensure that they remain lower than the retail price that it charges to subscribers.Orange’s intervention comes amid reports that Telefónica could abandon its acquisition if it considers the CNMC’s conditions to be too restrictive.Separately, the EC yesterday rejected a request by the CNMC to review Orange’s own proposed acquisition of Spanish alternative telco Jazztel, arguing that it was better qualified to rule on the case.Orange originally referred the case to the EC last year, and the Commission opened an in-depth investigation in December.“The European Commission has decided not to refer the planned acquisition of Jazztel p.l.c. by Orange S.A. to the Spanish competition authority for assessment under Spanish competition law. The Commission concluded that it was better placed to deal with the case with a view to ensuring consistency in the application of the merger control rules in the fixed and mobile telecommunications sectors across the European Economic Area (EEA),” the EC said in a statement yesterday. The Commission now has until April 30 to rule on the deal.last_img read more
