Dual Citizenship Bill Is Deceptive: Citizens Set Platform & Agenda For 2017

first_imgAs the political season heats up, there will be a lot of noise in Liberia about the gender equity bill, gay rights bill and dual citizenship bill. There is, however, no public outcry about abject poverty, the root causes and incentives for the rising ritualistic killings associated with the upcoming elections or the usual and seasonal impassable ‘highways’ between Tappita and Ganta or Gbarnga and Lofa since 1847. Considering the pressing life-and-death issues of rising ritualistic killings (17 deaths in Nimba County alone) and the nationwide highway transportation quagmire, it seems the noise over dual citizenship or gay bills are misplaced. The dual citizenship noise seems like symptoms of Liberia’s endemic corruption and lingering poor leadership in desperate moves for self-preservation and resuscitation to avert a natural death. It’s in the interest of citizens of Liberia that the real issues that pose serious risks to the safety and security of citizens for 169 years are prioritized. If the Republic of Liberia is a democracy, who is the boss of the Republic? Is the boss the government official or the citizens? If the citizen is the boss, why are politicians – not the citizens – responsible for setting the salaries and benefits of lawmakers or elected officials? If the citizen is the boss, why are citizens not allowed to directly propose laws without the approval or permission of the President or the Legislature? It seems Liberia’s governance system is corrupt by design and with such systemic corruption entrenched, Liberia’s greatest needs are neither a new president nor a new set of lawmakers to manage ongoing systemic corruption is in its 170th year! Liberia needs a new system that is democratic and designed by citizens, not the corrupt political elites. Who has the power and authority to change the current corrupt system? The corrupt system is working perfectly as designed by the political elites. Therefore, it’s the citizens, not the politicians – the President or the Legislators – who must change the corrupt system. A government of the people by the people and for the people must be designed by the people, starting with citizens’ input to setting salaries and benefits.Liberian citizens have a God-given right (inalienable right) to change the repressive system of government and replace it with a system that provides security, equal opportunities and is accountable to the citizens. In addition to their God-given rights, even the current flawed Liberian Constitution designed by the political elites to enable them to glean the resources of the country for personal use almost indefinitely also gives ordinary citizens the right to change a dangerous and corrupt system that threatens the safety and happiness of citizens: Article 1 of the 1986 Constitution is crystal clear on who has the power to change the system that provides incentives for ritualistic killers: “All power is inherent in the people. All free governments are instituted by their authority and for their benefit and they have the right to alter and reform the same when their safety and happiness so require.” We begin by denying the politicians the right to set the national agenda by setting up the citizens’ platform for Citizens’ Independence from domination by the political elites. If the politician is looking for a job, why must we allow him to set the agenda by bringing the political platform? The first two agendas of the citizens’ platform are clear:1. The citizen is the boss who hires, fires and sets the salaries and benefits of public servants.2. The citizen is the master who empowers the lawmakers and president and therefore reserves the right to directly propose laws for the greater common good, consistent with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, without the permission or approval of public servants such as the President or the Legislators.Public servants who beg for votes can’t be the same folks who are profiting personally for depleting the natural resources forever, taking bribes to pass laws against the interest of the country, setting their own salaries & benefits higher than all lawmakers in American states, thus leaving insufficient money for roads, bridges, education and healthcare. Despite lip service to dual citizenship, neither the President nor the Diaspora are genuinely serious about facilitating the return of thousands of Liberian citizens forced into exile by a barbarous war to which the government of Liberia through the Armed Forces of Liberia, countless rebel factions and many of the politicians ruling Liberia today were parties to the crime. Aside from empty speeches, and the awarding of extravagant salaries and benefits to selected friends and family members in the Diaspora, can the current government show a single policy crafted to encourage Liberians who fled for their lives during the brutal civil war to return? Is there an executive order of any sort? Are there incentives for the people who sustained tremendous losses and harm, including torture that forced them to flee to return and re-engage in business in the private sector? Are there tax breaks for returning Diaspora entrepreneurs? How about waivers of work permits for returning Diaspora in the private sector? Or is return of the Diaspora only tied to political jobs, with preference over those educated in Liberia? With Liberia waving visa fees for over 300 million Nigerian and other ECOWAS citizens with no family ties to Liberia to enter Liberia freely and engage in business, has there been any incentives for Diaspora return such as visa waivers to encourage thousands of Liberian who fled to other countries? How can these folks keep screaming about dual citizenship when the doors are effectively shut to the Liberian Diaspora? Given the wide range of economic incentives and opportunities yet unexplored by the current administration at the 11th hour, it seems to me the current strategy of dual citizenship is shortsighted and purely political and not economic. The days for the corrupt system are numbered with no opportunity for emergency life support! Liberia, Africa’s 1st independent republic cannot remain the 4th poorest country in the world. Liberia doesn’t need a contest of politicians vying for the presidency or legislature to dump a system, which is toxic and corrupt by design because citizens have the inalienable right to change the system. With ritualistic killings rising along with the number of presidential candidates, it’s urgent that change happens now! To its credit, even the current flawed constitution gives citizens the power to change the system when their safety and happiness so require. So while the political elites are making noise about non-issues like gay bill, gender bill and dual citizenship bill, ordinary citizens don’t need to make noise because they are the only ones who can make a difference by joining the non-partisan and non-political freedom movement of citizens creating their own platforms and setting the agenda for real change.A co-director of Greater Boston Refugee Ministry, Krua is a pastor and human rights activist. XBRL: Accounting Geeks Get Radical

first_imgbernard lunn Tags:#Analysis#enterprise#NYT#Trends 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now Related Posts It is not often that something as deeply geeky as XBRL gets onto the front page of Wired magazine. Daniel Roth’s superb article about radical transparency raised the profile of those four letters. What could be more boring than an XML standard for accountants that has been around for a decade? On the other hand, what could be more exciting than something that might disrupt and recreate the deeply broken global financial system? I spent two days at the XBRL US National Conference in New York to find out the reality, which is somewhere in between. The Ultra-Fast XBRL 101For XBRL newbies, here are a few key facts and some links for further research:XBRL stands for eXtensible Business Reporting Language. It is an open standard based on XML, created by an accountant named Charlie Hoffman. Read some quick facts here.If you tag something consistently, software applications can more easily analyze the data and present more useful information. Yes, that sounds like the semantic Web, and we all know that has faced the chicken-and-egg problem (i.e. not enough content is semantically tagged yet). But imagine a semantic Web standard for which governments around the world tell companies that they have to tag data that way.XBRL gained attention in the US when the SEC mandated that public companies report their financial results in XBRL (starting with companies that have a market cap over $5 billion). That has been going on for two quarters now, so all parties are getting real-world experience with XBRL.But XBRL traction is greater in other countries, especially Japan, Australia and Holland, where it is being used to standardize and simplify reporting to government regulators. In the UK, companies report to the taxman using XBRL.The Twitter hash tag is – you guessed it – #xbrl. Why XBRL May Be RevolutionaryThe best analogy for XBRL is the barcode in the retail world. The analogy works because it may take a while to happen… but when it does happen, everything will change. Imagine every number with a standardized tag telling a computer what it is.Here are the revolutionary implications of XBRL:A year ago, the global financial system suffered a cardiac arrest. That scared a lot of people. The patient now walks around the hospital grounds and occasionally forces a healthy smile. But most close observers recognize that the patient is far from healthy and is still indulging in cigarettes and double cheeseburgers. This heart attack affects us all. Radical transparency, to shine a light on those toxic assets and murky financial pools, is the best long-term cure. And XBRL, along with political will, is key to that radical transparency.Ordinary investors don’t trust the stock market. It feels like a casino where the roulette wheel is fixed. That is bad for all players in the economy. We need people to trust numbers again and to invest patiently in great companies that grow and pay for their kids’ tuition and their own retirement. That patient investment will help great companies grow and help those companies create good jobs. That is the way the stock market is supposed to work, and a few idealists think it could work that way in the future. Jane Q. Public needs access to analytical tools that are currently reserved for Wall Street insiders, and she has to have confidence in the numbers. Private investors need to be served by truly independent analysts who charge transparently. XBRL can play an important role in that. The cost for a company to report to government regulators is ridiculously high. This is a hidden tax on jobs (except for accountants!). The time and money spent on this could be used more productively. What if government agencies agreed on a single way to file reports using XBRL? This is happening today in Australia and the Netherlands. There is a major disconnect between the three types of reporting (i.e. to investors, to regulators and to internal management). The third type is what really drives business. These are the “business intelligence” and MIS tools and dashboards that managers rely on to help them run the business. What if one set of numbers could drive all three types of reports auto-magically? We are a long way from this, but the vendors leading the XBRL charge are creating the platforms that will enable this in the future.Today’s Reality CheckThe New York conference was about XBRL in the US, so we will keep the current analysis to what is happening here. The basic reality is that large public companies are obeying the SEC’s mandate by reporting in XBRL. No surprise there: they have to do it.So, they are spending some money to prepare these XBRL-compliant reports, by purchasing vendor tools and outsourcing the work. Some are doing it enthusiastically, anticipating the many downstream benefits. Others are doing it just to check off the box. This is hardly the best year for a new cost with an uncertain ROI. The same bean counters who are asking everyone to cut costs are asking for bigger budgets… “To do what, exactly?”That’s the problem. The returns are very unclear, and they are certainly more than a couple of quarters away, and most managers are thinking pretty short-term these days. The returns are unclear because investors are not using XBRL data in any meaningful way yet. It’s a chicken-and-egg problem. Not enough XBRL data exists yet for serious analysis. Many markets have chicken-and-egg problems. This particular one is easier to forecast because – without stretching the analogy too far – the government (via the SEC) is ordering the chickens to lay eggs. What the Future Will Likely BringThe future is always uncertain, but in this case we can predict a few things with some degree of certainty:More companies will report their financial data using XBRL, because they have to. So, vendors will find ways to make this increasingly easy and low-cost.XBRL will be used in the Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBS) market, because this is the market where we, via the government, own a lot of toxic assets. The technology to do this is available, and the politics indicate that it will happen.XBRL will be used in the bonds market to enable new forms of credit rating, because the current credit rating agencies clearly failed at their job, and the government will want to do something about this. What Is Still Very UnclearWhat new mechanisms, vendors, tools and services will emerge to make this data useful for investors, both individual and institutional? How will this impact the fast-growing $8.8 billion market for business intelligence systems. What will happen when the US government makes a bigger push for transparency using XBRL as leverage? The SEC’s mandate is a great start. But other countries are ahead of the US in XBRL adoption, and the Obama administration is making a big push for data transparency via data.gov and other initiatives. So, we are likely to see more in this area, but precisely what will happen is unclear.center_img Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo…last_img read more

Bill Cosby assault accuser jailed in San Diego on suspicion of drug

first_img Jessica Ranck Posted: July 25, 2017 SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — A 27-year-old model who has accused Bill Cosby of sexually assaulting her when she was 18 remained jailed in San Diego Tuesday on suspicion of bringing drugs and alcohol into a San Diego County jail.Chloe Goins was booked into the Las Colinas Detention Center early Monday on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance in prison and bringing alcohol or drugs into a prison, according to jail records. She’s being held in lieu of $25,000 bond, and an arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday in Chula Vista.According to TMZ.com and the San Diego Union-Tribune, Goins was parked in a lot at the George F. Bailey Detention Center in Otay Mesa when a deputy made contact with her about 10:45 p.m. Sunday. She was arrested a short time later after the deputy searched her car and found a drug thought to be heroin, a sheriff’s spokesman told the newspaper.Goins is one of dozens of women to accuse Cosby of sexually assault. She told investigators he drugged her drink at a 2008 party at the Playboy Mansion, causing her to black out. When she awoke, she was naked with a sticky substance on her chest and Cosby was sucking on her toes, she said. After withdrawing her initial complaint against Cosby, Goins filed a second lawsuit against the comedian last year that also named Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. She accused Hefner of knowing about Cosby’s history of alleged sexual abuse.Cosby denied Goins’ claims, asserting he was in New York at the time of  the party, and prosecutors declined to press charges.  Jessica Ranck, July 25, 2017 Bill Cosby assault accuser jailed in San Diego on suspicion of drug possession Categories: Local San Diego News FacebookTwitterlast_img read more

Barack Obama says goodbye in farewell speech

first_imgUS President Barack Obama gets emotional as he delivers a statement on executive actions to reduce gun violence on January 5, 2016 at the White House in Washington, DC. AFPBarack Obama closes the book on his presidency Tuesday, with a farewell speech in Chicago that will try to lift supporters felled by Donald Trump’s shock victory.Obama’s last trip on Air Force One will be a pilgrimage to his adoptive hometown, where he will address a sell-out crowd not far from where he accepted the presidency eight years ago.Diehard fans—many African Americans—have braved Chicago’s frigid winter to collect free tickets, which now sell for upwards of $1,000 a piece on Craigslist. The First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden will come along on for the ride.Obama’s cross-country trek would be a sentimental trip down memory lane, were it not slap-bang in the middle of a tumultuous presidential handover.Trump has smashed conventions, vowed to efface Obama’s legacy and hurled personal insults left and right. The 2016 election campaign has raised serious questions about the resilience of US democracy. In a virtually unprecedented move, US intelligence has accused the Kremlin of tipping the electoral scales in Trump’s favor.Democrats, cast into the political wilderness with the loss of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives plus a majority of statehouses, are struggling to regroup. With an approval rating hovering around 55 percent, Obama will hope to steel them for new battles ahead.Lead speechwriter Cody Keenan said the address will be about Obama’s vision for where the country should still go.“It’s not going to be like an anti-Trump speech, it’s not going to be a red meat, rabble rousing thing, it will be statesman-like but it will also be true to him,” Keenan told AFP. “It will tell a story.”Life after White House -Trump’s unorthodox politics has thrown 55-year-old Obama’s transition and post-presidency plans into flux.Obama, having vowed a smooth handover of power, finds himself being increasingly critical of Trump as he prepares to leave office on January 20.After that there will still be a holiday and an autobiography, but Obama could find himself being dragged backed into the political fray if Trump were to enact a Muslim registry or deport adults brought to the United States years ago by their parents.Having vowed to take a backseat in politics, Obama’s second act could yet be as politically engaged as Jimmy Carter—whose post-presidency has remade his image as an elder statesman. Many Obama aides who had planned to take exotic holidays or launch coffer-replenishing forays into the private sector are also reassessing their future and mulling a return to the political trenches.Obama’s foundation is already gearing up for a quasi-political role—funneling idealistic youngsters into public life.Presidential precedent -Presidents since George Washington have delivered a farewell address of sorts.Washington’s final 7,641-word message—which is still read once a year in the Senate by tradition—contained warnings about factionalism and interference by foreign powers that seem oddly prescient. But speechwriter Keenan sees few obvious templates: “Bush and Clinton did theirs from here (the White House), George H.W. Bush went to West Point, gave a foreign policy speech,” he told AFP. “They are all totally different.”The trip to Chicago is not just for nostalgia, Keenan indicated.“The thread that has run though his career from his days as community organizer to the Oval Office is the idea that if you get ordinary people together and get them educated, get them empowered, get them to act on something, that’s when good things happen,” he said.“For him, as someone who started as a community organizer, whose campaign was powered by young people, ordinary people, we decided we wanted to go back to Chicago.”“Chicago is not just his hometown, it’s where his career started.”And now it is also where Obama’s presidential career will effectively end.last_img read more
