Sunday Blog: A cheat sheet to Sumner Newscow-The Dore bowl contest

first_imgCommentary by Tracy McCue — With Christmas heading our way, I’m in no mood to write anything heavy. So instead I’ll give you a Christmas present with a cheat sheet for the second annual “Sumner Newscow – The Dore College Bowl” contest (entry forms can be found here). Really, you don’t need to give me a present in return. Remember entries are due TOMORROW!Little Caesar Bowl (Dec. 26) West Kentucky vs. Central Michgan— We don’t have a Little Caesar’s in Wellington, but I have had a few Little Caesar’s pizzas during a couple drunken nights in college. Here’s my advice: go with Central Michigan – only for principle. West Kentucky just hired that loser Bobby Petrino who got caught cheating on his wife and lying about it at Arkansas. And that was after he had ran out on the Atlanta Falcons a few years earlier. My pick: Central Michigan. Orange Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. Florida St. The Seminoles are 12.5 points favorite against the Huskies. People are fuming about Northern Illinois even being in a BCS Bowl game. But I remember a sparky little school from Idaho called Boise State who upset Oklahoma in that legendary bowl game around 10 years ago. I’m convinced these non-BCS bowl teams can compete with the big boys. My pick: UPSET! Northern Illinois. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password! Typical purple fan. Report Reply 3 replies · active 397 weeks ago 0 Vote up Vote down CueballSumnernewscow 94p · 398 weeks ago OK, you got me Billy. You round up your posse and drag me from my home and give me a public lynching. Just let me have a coat. It’s cold out there. If statie is so good and Baylor beat them, I don’t know why you didn’t pick Baylor. Oh yeah, out of spite. Which reminds me, I’m out of Sprite. I keep waiting for Steve Spurrier to make something out of South Carolina. Michigan once was a school we cared about in football. My pick: Michigan. Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (Dec. 29) Arizona State at Navy — I’ll be doing my part… eating. My pick: Arizona State. Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas — Minnesota vs. Texas Tech. Rumor has it that Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville was taking a bunch of TT recruits to dinner when he received a phone call from the University of Cincinnati asking him to become its new head coach. He announces to the recruits “I’m going to the bathroom,” got up, left the restaurant and took the job at his new school never to return from the bathroom. It was a crappy thing to do to those recruits. My pick: Texas Tech. New Era Pinstripe Bowl (Dec. 29) — Syracuse vs. West Virginia. This was the same bowl in which K-State got hosed a couple of years ago when a player was flagged for saluting the crowd after a touchdown. OMG, I’m still ticked about it. My pick: West Virginia. Gator Bowl: Northwestern vs. Mississippi State. I’ve always enjoy spelling M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I, so I’ll do it again. My pick: Mississippi State. Military Bowl (Dec. 27) San Jose State vs. Bowling Green — This is one of those bowls featuring a team with a coach who has already flown the coop. San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre is going to the University of Colorado. It’s debatable if that’s a step up. Take the team with the most “p.o.” . My pick: San Jose State. Independence Bowl (Dec. 28) Ohio at Louisiana-Monroe — I love the fact that Frank Solich has had a great career at Ohio after being thrown out as the head coach at Nebraska for losing three games in one season. But, dang, how can you not like a college with the name “Monroe” in it? My pick: Ohio. (Jan. 1) Heart of Dallas Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Purdue. Ever get the feeling that the state of Texas starts up a bowl just so it can tell everyone else, “we have more bowls than you do, partner.” My pick: Oklahoma State. Sun Bowl: Georga Tech vs. USC. USC has lost five games this year. How does that happen? Can’t USC recruiters just breath and five-star recruits fall in their laps? My pick: USC. Fiesta Bowl: (Jan. 3) Kansas State vs. Oregon. K-State’s ride this season has been a good one and most certainly unexpected. Oregon comes in as 9.5 point favorite. But KSU has covered the spread in all but two ball games, Baylor and Missouri State. The Ducks have a “been there, done that” feel to them. KSU is glad to be in a BCS Bowl. KSU’s defense has its work cut out for it. But, you know what, so does Oregon. Collin Klein in his final college game will pull off the upset. My pick: Kansas State. Armed Forces Bowl (Dec. 29)— Rice vs. Air Force. Nothing like a battle between two .500 teams from colleges who actually educate their football players. My pick: Rice. BBVA Compass Bowl (Jan. 5) Pittsburgh vs. Ole Miss. This is one of those game when you ponder to yourself, after watching the Rose, Cotton and Fiesta Bowl games do you really want to sit on the recliner and watch “this?” My pick: Pittsburgh. Alamo Bowl (Dec. 29) Texas vs. Oregon State — This might be the first bowl so far that is remotely interesting. Texas seems to be underachieving in the worst way and Oregon State was at one point battling for the Pac 10 crown. My pick: Oregon State. Music City Bowl: N.C. State v. Vanderbilt. The bowl with the coolest name. I have a soft spot for Vanderbilt because it’s the only school in the Southeast Conference that doesn’t act like complete jerks. My pick: Vanderbilt. BCS National Championship (Jan. 7) Notre Dame vs. Alabama. I was so hoping to see a national championship game without an SEC team. But it was not to be. I like the Notre Dame story line. I’ve never been a big Fighting Irish fan but college football is more relevant when they are good. Alabama is also the perfect villain – the team from the big bad SEC with a insincere coach and a team not really that interesting to watch. Here’s hoping for some Irish luck. My pick: Notre Dame. Sugar Bowl: (Jan. 2) Louisville vs. Florida. I’m giving my nod to the Florida Gators because it is the school of Tim Tebow. My pick: Florida. Cotton Bowl (Jan. 4) Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma. OK, Ok, enough of the Sooners are co-champions of the Big 12 talk. We know K-State beat the Sooners in October thus making the Cats the true Big 12 Champions. Nevertheless I’m pulling for the Sooners in this one. Texas A&M left the Big 12 and I just can’t help being one of those kinds of people who hates Johnny Football just because ESPN loves him so. My pick: Oklahoma. Rose Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Stanford. It is good that some college football traditions aren’t lost with these bowls. The Big 10 champion is playing the Pac 10 champion on New Years Day after the big parade. I thought about picking Wisconsin with my “jilted coach” philosophy after Bret Bielema fled to Arkansas. But the Pac 10 usually wins these Rose Bowls. My pick: Stanford. Russell Athletics Bowl (Dec. 28) Rutgers vs. Virginia Tech — This bowl features two teams that stiffed or is about to stiff the Big East Conference. This conference realignment makes me hate college athletics which is too bad because I love college athletics. My pick: Rutgers. Capital One Bowl: Nebraska vs. Georgia. Two teams with BCS aspirations, but are now playing in a bowl named after a financial institution. Going with the Dawgs on this one. I still haven’t forgiven Nebraska’s exit from the Big 12. My pick: Georgia. Liberty Bowl: Iowa St. vs. Tulsa. This bowl can be placed in the category of “teams closer to us that we still couldn’t care less about.” My pick: Iowa State. Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl: Michigan State vs. TCU — My son has chosen TCU as his college of choice. Since the Horned Frogs are taking the McCue’s down the path of bankruptcy, we might as well go purple. My pick: TCU. Chick-fil-A Bowl: Clemson vs. LSU. This one is a good one with two 10-2 teams. Clemson has a high voltage offense. LSU has a tenacious defense. In this game there will be a lot of Tigers, but no Honey Badger. My pick: Louisiana State. Bowl (Jan. 6) Kent State vs. Arkansas State. This bowl is only remotely interesting because there might be one of those sexy commercials. My pick: Kent State. Holiday Bowl (Dec. 27) Baylor vs. UCLA — Baylor ruined everything for K-State this year. Everything! My pick: UCLA out of spite. Belk Bowl (Dec. 27) Cincinnati vs. Duke — It would be cool to have a Sumner Newscow Bowl. I’d only invite schools with vet colleges. Duke doesn’t play football. My pick: Cincinnati.last_img
