BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND WASHOUT

first_imgLooking out any window in Donegal this weekend and the sight that greets you is one of steamed up windows and the sound of rain pelting and pounding the other side. You would be forgiven in thinking that it was just another day in winter and we couldn’t possibly be entering the first week of June. The reality is we are looking at what is probably going to be the wettest June Bank Holiday weekend we’ve had in a very long time. With events taking place in Ardara, Fintown, Annagry and Arranmore it’s nothing short of a disaster for the hundreds of people due to attend the weekend long festivities. With Met Éireann predicting a dry start to tomorrow and even some sunny spells in places. Our advice, get out and about early in the day and make the most of it!As by afternoon, rain and hail showers will become widespread and in some places possible thundery outbursts are to be expected. And with winds strongest near the coast it’s looking like a complete weekend washout for all of Donegal. first_imgKyler Murray has officially decided for the NFL Draft, but this baseball vs. football saga is only just beginning.Monday’s deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft really only cleared up the football side of things for Murray with a result that became an expectation for the A’s over the past week. The true deadline for Murray appears to be Feb. 14, the day A’s position players are scheduled to report to Arizona for spring training.I have declared for the NFL Draft.— Kyler Murray …last_img

Will Apple’s Apology To China Be Enough To Fix Things?

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… brian s hall Tags:#Apple#China#international#Tim Cook Early Monday morning, Apple CEO Tim Cook issued an apology letter, written in Chinese and posted to Apple’s corporate site in China, in which the company promised to improve its customer support and warranty policies in China. The mea culpa came after several public attacks by official China media.(See also What’s Really Behind China’s Attacks On Apple.)“Sincere Apologies”According to The Wall Street Journal, which offered a translation, the Cook letter read, in part:We are aware that a lack of communications… led to the perception that Apple is arrogant and doesn’t care or attach enough importance to consumer feedback. We express our sincere apologies for any concerns or misunderstandings this gave consumers.Cook’s contrite, rapid response ws not unexpected. Just last week, in “Nobody Likes Tim Cook. Oh, Except Apple Customers And His Peers,” I praised Cook for his willingness to quickly get in front of issues like Apple Maps and Foxconn labor concerns. And given that Apple’s 2012 sales in China were $23.8 billion and China is Apple’s second largest market, Cook really didn’t have much choice but to make nice. Will The Apology Help?Of continuing concern, though, is whether or not the China government is singling out Apple. Last month ReadWrite noted that actions taken across multiple organizations within China’s government could be part of a concerted effort to either limit Apple’s potential within the country or to help China build it’s own viable smartphone platform – to compete against Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. While this remains supposition, China’s aggressive pressure on Apple has clearly had an impact. Again, from the Journal:Apple has been the target of criticism in China’s state-run media since the middle of last month. China’s powerful national broadcaster, China Central Television, and The People’s Daily—the official mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party—have accused Apple of skirting warranty periods, adopting customer-service policies that discriminate against Chinese customers, and formulating an inadequate and arrogant response to the reports. As ReadWrite detailed last month, a widely viewed China Central Television (CCTV) report that accused Apple of not fully meeting its product warranty obligations generated a significant social media backlash within the country. Per the Cook letter, Apple will extend warranty coverage on the iPhone 4 and 4S and will replace any broken iPhone 4 or 4S with a new phone – not a refurbished device, as was the previous practice. The company will also provide additional training to Apple authorized resellers regarding company warranty policy and make its product warranty policies more clear to prospective buyers.  Image of Tim Cook courtesy of Reuters.center_img Related Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Independent MP forms party, ‘army without guns’ in Assam

first_imgNaba Sarania, an Independent member of the Lok Sabha from Assam who is also a former extremist, has formed a political party as well as an “army without guns”.The Gana Surakhya Party (GSP), launched on Sunday, is expected to challenge the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), which has been running the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) since its creation in 2003. The BPF is a partner in the BJP-led alliance that rules the State.Eye on BTC electionThe GSP’s birth has assumed significance ahead of the election to the 40-seat BTC early next year across the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri, politically polarised between the Bodos and the non-Bodos.The Bodos are the largest plains tribe in the north-eastern region, but account for a little more than 30% of the population in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) administered by the BTC. Nineteen communities, including Muslims, form the non-Bodos. Backed by the non-Bodos, Mr. Sarania has won in the Lok Sabha election from Kokrajhar twice since 2014. “We had to form the GSP because of the ‘atrocities’ on the non-Bodos in areas under the BTC and also because no party has cared for them,” he said, attributing the plight of the non-Bodos to the “undemocratic” and “one-sided” Bodo Accord signed in 2003 for forming the BTC under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.“We hope to win the BTC election next year… We will fight for equal rights and status for all communities,” he said.Mr. Sarania, once an ULFA , clarified on the BTAD army formed alongside his party. “This is a non-violent army, without guns. It will have 5,000 volunteers in each BTAD district for protecting the lives, property and livelihood of the non-Bodos,” he said. He had earlier said the army would be modelled on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. On the other hand, the BPF has been trying to end factionalism among the Bodos ahead of the election. Hagrama Mohilary, chairman of the BTC and a former extremist leader, called for the unification of the Bodos. A few days ago, Mr. Mohilary had met former MP Urkhao Gwra Brahma, leader of the United People’s Party (Liberal), for “burying their differences” and fighting the election together. The two had fallen out more than a decade ago.last_img read more

Tactical rampage down a Sao Paolo beach with two precious socks rolled together. The rattle of a dribbled tin can on the lanes snaking through the Buenos Aires shantytowns.Soccer is sport at its most elemental: Anything can be a ball, anywhere a field of dreams, only passion the mandatory shirt to be pulled on. In this primitiveness of soccer rests its universal appeal; in its intrinsic dance-wingers spinning away from markers, strikers pirouetting in the box, midfielders on spiralling runs-lies its aesthetic value. Holland striker Marco van Basten flew across the field with such sinewy splendour that a Dutch TV documentary compared his movements to a ballet dancer’s. When Brazilian Ronaldo burst like a weaving ox through defences, a Spanish journalist wrote: “He has the constitution of a champion boxer, but the feet of Fred Astaire.Yet greatness has one final measurement. In Yaounde, Cameroon, stands a statue of Roger Milla; in Sao Paolo the faithful explain that when Pele meets the Pope, it is Pele who is granting the audience; in Buenos Aires boys still genuflect at the altar of a factory worker’s son called Diego Maradona. It is the worship accorded to men who danced their finest on the World Cup stage.last_img read more
